The Lanterns

Smooth Serviceberry; Amelanchier laevis
I've identified the leaf 'lanterns' with the caption. The background is Red Pine; Pinus resinosa.

  1. Fantastic. Your forest is a wonderland of beautiful flora. Never heard of a Serviceberry. What looks like a bud is actually a berry.

    1. Serviceberry is a small tree. The 'lanterns' are the leaves opening; this species typically has the reddy to purple colouring. The flowers are white and the berries come later in the summer, somewhat resembling blueberries.

  2. At first glance, I though a bunch of butterflies were on the branches. Still a pretty fantastic shot.

    1. Butterflies eh, if only they would sit as still as the leaves.
